Our History

In the early 1960’s, brothers Glenn and Myron Smith began hauling sawdust that they used to bed their families dairy cows. The sawdust was purchased from local sawmills in Medina, Ohio. When they had an excess, they would sell it to other local farmers for their cows and horses. This was the beginning of Smith Bros. Inc.

To handle the growing demand for sawdust, the brothers purchased a truck to haul sawdust from sawmills in southern Ohio. At that time, bark off of the mills’ logs was a waste product. The sawmill would burn it or haul it to the dump. Glenn and Myron began using the waste product as landscaping material. Over the years, they developed techniques to process the bark and create a superior product that is still sold today.

As times on the farm changed the Smith family converted their dairy farm into a horse stable, known as Broken Paddle Stables. The stable was run by Richard and Marguerite Smith, the parents to Glenn and Myron. Broken Paddle Stables became the areas largest horse boarding facility with over forty boarders. Marguerite Smith taught riding lessons and gave trail rides.

To provide complete customer service to the equine community, Richard Smith opened a feed store in the late 1970’s which featured Buckeye feeds. Together the Smith family offered several different products and services to serve their customers’ needs.

Although the horses are gone, the Smith family’s dedication to customer service is alive and well. Smith Bros. Inc. still provides animal bedding and feed to the equine industry as well as a large variety of other animal feeds for dogs, cats, birds, and many other species. As the need for different products in the green industry changed, Smith Bros. Inc. has evolved as well. We have developed color enriched and organic mulches along with becoming an EPA Class IV recycling center. For many years one type of mulch was all that was needed. Today we offer over twenty different mulches all produced at our Medina, Ohio location. Using the family’s experience, they can provide a knowledgeable service with superior products.

Smith Bros. Inc. is now in the hands of its third generation with Myron’s son Jeremy Smith. Jeremy is dedicated to carrying out the family tradition of quality and service. With his innovative ideas, Smith Bros. Inc. has grown and adapted to the needs of our customers. We have become one of northern Ohio’s largest and most respected landscape supply companies.
